The latest generation of the Honda Civic has already made its mark after over a year on the market. Offering a lower-slung body, wider and longer wheel base, not to mention a popular turbocharged engine option has made it quite a bit of fun to drive. With all that in mind, one can imagine its top-shelf performance variant—the Type R, being just as much of a blast.

Well, consider that conjecture proved. Honda has kicked off our week with some stellar news—the 306-hp Type R has set a lap record at Germany’s fabled Nürburgring for a front-wheel drive car. With finalized specifications, and a roll cage added for safety, the Type R made the lap in 7 minutes and 43.8 seconds, trouncing the outgoing time by three seconds, plus.

What does that mean for American drivers interested in the forthcoming Type R? It means that they’ll have a lot more street legal fun than they ever dreamed of. The Civic Type R’s dimensions can also be found on the marque’s more pedestrian versions, so if you want to drive a sedan, hatch, or coupe where driving fun comes standard, check out our offerings!
